Anyway: Have heard the thingy about "tones", "values"...? I guess using ONE color (gray) is a quick way to calculate "values". Basic volume values. I colorize that afterwards and then comes the "tones".
When on PS, overlay, multiply, subtlety is the key.
I also like to play with the brush options so the strokes look "different" every time. And texture again.
